Pediatric Dentistry
Gentle Treatment for Children
When it comes to dental appointments, every parent worries about their child experiencing pain and discomfort, especially with a new dentist or dental hygienist.
Through constant open communication with our pediatric patients and the use of educational children’s dental literature, Dedicated Dental maintains its ability to put children at ease to successfully gain the consent of the patient to continue the procedure.
Our dentists speak to children at their level and use words that kids can comprehend. Rest easy knowing your children are in great hands with the providers at Dedicated Dental.
What to Expect at Your Child’s Dental Visit
We recommend your child see a dentist twice a year, starting at 4 years old. At that age, your child will probably have their first dental X-rays to check for cavities.
During your child’s dental exam, we will also address:
- How many teeth are and should be present
- Loose teeth
- Gum health
- Mouth sores
- Bite problems
- Tongue and speech
- Fluoride use
- Diet and health history
- General oral health
- And more
Pediatric Teeth Cleaning & Teeth-Brushing Tips
Most children do not know how to properly brush their teeth. The American Dental Association recommends brushing twice a day for 2 minutes. When your child visits us, we will clean and polish their teeth and check for cavities and other potential issues. Our child-friendly dental assistants can give older children tips and advice for better brushing techniques. Our goal is to provide a positive experience for your child, so he or she looks forward to their next dentist visit!
Fillings, Extractions, & Braces
Should your child need dental work – including fillings, extractions, or braces – our family dentists are extremely talented when it comes to working with children and teens.
By the time children are about 6 years old, they start to lose their baby teeth, which are gradually all replaced by permanent adult teeth.
Cavities can occur in children – even in those as young as 5 years old or younger. It is important to treat a child’s dental issues, even if it occurs in their baby teeth, because not treating it can lead to other, more serious issues like infections that may require a root canal, which can impact proper development of their adult teeth.
Children may need a tooth extracted if there is an abscess (infection) under the tooth or when a cavity is very large. Overcrowded teeth are another reason a child or teen may need teeth extracted.
Your child may need braces to correct crooked or overlapping teeth. Most often, dentists recommend children get braces prior to puberty – when they are between 9 and 14 years old – because it’s easier to adjust their teeth then. Each situation is different, however, so the best thing to do is to ask your child’s dentist at Dedicated Dental for their recommendation.
